Where it came from
Hellblazer number 120, published in December 1997, stands as a pivotal installment in the long-running Vertigo series featuring the occult detective John Constantine. This issue is part of the celebrated run written by Paul Jenkins with interior art by Sean Phillips. The story reflects the dark, gritty tone that defined the series during the late 1990s, focusing on the character's cynical struggle against both supernatural threats and his own self-destructive tendencies.
The cover art for this issue was created by Tim Bradstreet, whose photorealistic, noir-inspired style became synonymous with the aesthetic of the Hellblazer series during this era. Bradstreet aimed to capture Constantine's weary, world-beaten persona, often utilizing high-contrast lighting and detailed rendering. At the time of its release, the series was well-regarded for its mature themes and character-driven narratives, helping to cement Constantine as an iconic figure within the DC/Vertigo imprint.
