Where it came from
Published in September 2000, Hellblazer #152 serves as the third chapter in the 'Hard Time' story arc, a seminal run in the Vertigo Comics title that follows the cynical occultist John Constantine. This specific issue was crafted during the tenure of writer Brian Azzarello and artist Richard Corben, a creative team noted for shifting the character toward gritty, hyper-realistic crime narratives that prioritized Constantine's psychological isolation over high-fantasy supernatural tropes.
The visual direction of this arc was heavily influenced by Richard Corben's signature style, characterized by heavy shadows and a visceral, almost grotesque approach to character anatomy. This artistic choice was intentional, aiming to mirror the bleak, claustrophobic setting of the prison where Constantine is incarcerated. Upon release, this era of Hellblazer was recognized for its stark departure from previous creative voices, cementing a reputation for uncompromising maturity within the long-running series.
