Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Monster of Nivola #1

Released in 2015, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Monster of Nivola #1 serves as a self-contained one-shot within the broader Hellboy expanded universe. Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson, the story is set in the 1950s, a decade frequently explored in the B.P.R.D. spin-offs to highlight Hellboy's early years working for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. The narrative focuses on a mission in Italy, bridging the gap between the character's earlier adventures and the expansive lore established in Mignola's core bibliography.

The visual design for this issue was executed by artist Laurence Campbell, whose gritty, atmospheric style has become a staple of the Hellboy series. Campbell’s work on this title was praised for its commitment to the established aesthetic of the franchise—emphasizing shadow and stark, ominous environments—while maintaining the distinct tone of a standalone folk-horror investigation. It was received by readers as a successful addition to the B.P.R.D. mythos, specifically for its ability to capture the tone of classic Mignola-penned Hellboy stories within a smaller, concentrated scope.
