Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #3

Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #3 was published in 1994 as part of the debut miniseries for Mike Mignola's signature character. Released under the Dark Horse Comics Legend imprint, the series was designed to introduce the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense and establish the dark, folklore-inspired aesthetic that would define the franchise. Mignola served as both writer and artist, employing his trademark high-contrast, expressionistic style that prioritized atmosphere and shadow over traditional comic book realism.

The collaboration between Mignola and writer John Byrne provided the narrative foundation for the issue, with Byrne scripting the story based on Mignola's plot and layouts. Upon release, the series was well-received for its unique visual departure from the contemporary superhero-dominated market, earning critical acclaim and two Eisner Awards. This third installment serves as a pivotal bridge in the initial story arc, solidifying the grounded yet supernatural tone that eventually fueled an expansive multi-media franchise.
