Hellboy: Wake the Devil #2

Released in 1996 as the second installment of the five-part Wake the Devil miniseries, this comic was published by Dark Horse Comics under their Legend imprint. It continues Mike Mignola's signature supernatural narrative, expanding on the mythos established in his earlier Seed of Destruction arc by delving deeper into the lore of Rasputin and the Nazi occult efforts. This issue follows Hellboy as he traverses Europe to track a string of paranormal disturbances, marking a pivotal moment in the character's development as an independent investigator.

The visual identity of this issue remains a cornerstone of Mignola's aesthetic, characterized by his minimalist use of heavy shadows and stark, angular compositions. Mignola both wrote and illustrated the series, intentionally stripping away superfluous detail to prioritize mood and atmosphere over traditional comic book realism. Upon release, the series was well-received by critics and readers, cementing the Hellboy franchise as a critical success and setting a high standard for independent dark fantasy comics of the late nineties.
