Where it came from
Himiko: Shinsetsu Yamataikoku-Den is a historical fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Daijiro Morohoshi, serialized in the seinen magazine Weekly Manga Goraku. The series offers a stylized, speculative reimagining of the life of Himiko, the legendary shaman-queen of the Yamatai kingdom during the Yayoi period of Japan. Issue 20 represents a late-stage installment in the narrative, reflecting Morohoshi's characteristic blend of meticulous historical research and eerie, folkloric surrealism.
Morohoshi is celebrated in the manga industry for his profound influence on the psychological and mythological genres. His design approach for this series focuses on atmospheric world-building, utilizing detailed, stark linework to convey the mysterious and primal nature of ancient Japanese society. The work is widely regarded by critics as a sophisticated exploration of cultural identity and historical myth, appreciated primarily for its intellectual depth and its departure from conventional shonen-style historical fiction.
