Hōkago, Voca-ken de! #1

Hōkago, Voca-ken de! was launched as a spin-off series rooted in the immense popularity of the Vocaloid software and its community-driven culture. This first issue emerged during a period of intense fan engagement with the virtual singers, serving as an anthology-style collection of short stories and illustrations that explored the everyday school life of the characters. By situating these digital icons within a relatable Japanese high school setting, the creators aimed to bridge the gap between abstract musical personas and traditional slice-of-life manga storytelling.

The design of the volume emphasizes a lighthearted, expressive aesthetic typical of doujin-influenced publications that transitioned into commercial distribution. It features contributions from various artists who were tasked with capturing the distinct vocal, visual, and personality traits of the Vocaloid cast. Upon its release, the series was received primarily by an audience already deeply entrenched in the VOCALOID fandom, acting as a dedicated vessel for the imaginative fan-fiction and artistic interpretations that defined the early digital idol landscape.
