House of Secrets #92

House of Secrets #92 was published by DC Comics in 1971, emerging during a period when the Comics Code Authority had loosened its restrictions on horror-themed content. This issue serves as a landmark in comic book history, as it marks the first appearance of Swamp Thing, a character conceived by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson. The story, titled 'Swamp Thing,' was intended as a standalone short story set in the early 20th century, though its immediate popularity spurred DC to transition the character into a recurring feature.

Bernie Wrightson’s intricate, atmospheric ink work on this issue is frequently cited as a career highlight, capturing a sense of gothic dread and melancholy that defined the tone for the character’s future iterations. The design of the creature—a man transformed into a swamp-dwelling monster—was intended to evoke classic monster movie tropes while grounding the narrative in a more somber, psychological struggle. Upon its release, the issue was well-received by readers and critics alike, quickly establishing Swamp Thing as an enduring figure in the DC horror canon.
