Where it came from
House of Secrets #122 was published by DC Comics in July 1974. During this era, DC was heavily invested in the horror anthology format, leaning into the supernatural and macabre themes popularized by the Comics Code Authority's loosening restrictions in the early 1970s. This specific issue reflects the editorial direction of the time, which favored self-contained, atmospheric short stories featuring recurring narrators like Abel.
The cover art for this issue is credited to Bernie Wrightson, one of the most highly regarded illustrators of the era. Wrightson, famous for his intricate line work and moody, gothic aesthetic, was a frequent contributor to DC’s horror line during the 1970s. His work on this series is frequently cited by collectors for its technical precision and ability to evoke a sense of creeping dread, cementing his reputation as a master of the comic book horror genre.
