Human Target #17

Human Target #17, published in 2004, is part of the limited series written by Peter Milligan with interior art by Cliff Chiang. This iteration of the character, Christopher Chance, was reimagined as a gritty, psychological noir thriller that moved away from the character's lighter Silver Age roots. Milligan focused heavily on the identity-erasing aspect of the protagonist's work, exploring the toll that constantly inhabiting other people's lives takes on the psyche.

Cliff Chiang’s minimalist and moody aesthetic proved vital to the series' critical reception, grounding the high-concept premise in a realistic, shadow-heavy style. The series was well-regarded for its mature approach to the human condition rather than traditional superhero tropes. This specific issue contributes to the character's modern definition, balancing the espionage elements with deep character-driven drama that established the template for later live-action adaptations.
