Where it came from
Igor no Shima is a distinctive manga series that emerged from the independent Japanese alternative comics scene, reflecting a specific period of underground storytelling characterized by surrealism and dark humor. The second issue continues the series' exploration of its titular protagonist, Igor, set against the backdrop of an isolated, mysterious island landscape that serves as a canvas for the author's exploration of alienation and existential absurdity.
The series is noted for its idiosyncratic art style, which eschews traditional shonen aesthetics in favor of raw, evocative linework that emphasizes mood over meticulous polish. While it remains a niche title within the broader manga landscape, it has been recognized by scholars and collectors of alternative sequential art for its bold departure from mainstream narrative structures and its commitment to a singular, authorial vision.
