Where it came from
Incredible Hulk #60 was published in 1963 during a transitional period for the character within the Marvel Universe. Following the initial cancellation of the original Hulk series after six issues, the character appeared as a guest star in various titles before joining the Avengers. This issue arrived as Marvel was actively refining its shared universe and building consistent lore around its growing roster of heroes.
The interior art for this issue was provided by Steve Ditko, whose distinct, moody style helped define the visual language of early Silver Age Marvel. The story continues the character's struggle for identity and acceptance, reflecting the themes of alienation and misunderstood power that Stan Lee and his collaborators established as the core identity of the Hulk. It remains a notable example of the experimental storytelling that characterized Marvel during this formative era.
