Where it came from
Itoshii Uso: Yasashii Yami is a psychological thriller manga series written and illustrated by Aya Takagi. The series, which translates roughly to 'Lovely Lie: Gentle Darkness,' began serialization in Kodansha’s 'Kiss' magazine in 2017. The narrative centers on a high school reunion that unravels into a complex web of lies, secrets, and murder, leaning heavily into the suspense and domestic noir genres popular in contemporary josei manga.
Volume 7 serves as a critical installment in the series, maintaining Takagi’s signature tension-filled visual style characterized by expressive, lingering character close-ups and stark shadow work. The series was well-received for its tight pacing and ability to subvert common tropes of the reunion-drama subgenre, eventually being adapted into a live-action television drama in 2022. The physical release of volume 7 remains a sought-after piece for collectors of the dark-suspense josei catalog.
