Where it came from
Itoshi no Kanojo wa Kakure Otaku, or 'My Girlfriend is a Closet Otaku,' is a manga series centered on the humorous and relatable dynamics of a couple navigating their secret hobbies. Published by Ichijinsha, the second volume continues the narrative established in the debut, focusing on the comedic friction and eventual support found between the protagonist and his partner as they attempt to keep their respective subcultural interests hidden from the outside world.
The series draws heavily from the established tropes of modern Japanese romantic comedies that emphasize niche hobbies, such as gaming or anime fandom, as central plot devices. The artwork typically utilizes a clean, expressive style characteristic of the seinen and shonen-adjacent comedy demographics, aiming to capture both the absurdity of the characters' double lives and the genuine emotional progression of their relationship. Upon its release, the volume was noted for its lighthearted tone and its contribution to the growing sub-genre of manga exploring the mainstreaming of otaku culture.
