JLA #1 was published in January 1997 as the launch of a high-profile relaunch of the Justice League of America. Following a period where the team's membership and tone had become fragmented, writer Grant Morrison and artist Howard Porter were tasked with revitalizing the concept. Their goal was to return the team to its 'magnificent seven' roots, focusing on the core archetypal heroes—Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter—to establish them as a modern pantheon of gods rather than mere vigilantes.

The aesthetic of the series was defined by Porter’s dynamic, oversized page layouts and John Dell’s bold inks, which complemented Morrison’s grand-scale, cosmic storytelling. The issue was met with significant critical and commercial success, effectively grounding the DC Universe’s power dynamics for the next decade. It is widely credited with establishing the 'widescreen' comic book style that came to dominate the superhero genre throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
