JLA : Justice #1

Released in 2005 by DC Comics, JLA: Justice #1 serves as the debut installment of a twelve-issue limited series crafted by the creative trio of Alex Ross, Jim Krueger, and Doug Braithwaite. The project originated from Ross's long-standing desire to depict the Justice League within a cinematic, grounded aesthetic that paid homage to the Golden and Silver Age designs. Following his success on Marvels, Ross collaborated with Krueger to weave a complex narrative involving the villains of the DC Universe receiving premonitions of an impending apocalypse, a premise intended to deconstruct the classic hero-villain dynamic.

The series is celebrated primarily for its painterly, hyper-realistic art style, which Ross developed through meticulous gouache painting. Braithwaite provided the layouts and pencils, over which Ross applied his signature detailed coloring and character shading. Upon its release, the series was received with widespread critical acclaim for its ambitious scope and visual fidelity, becoming a quintessential example of the prestige-format limited series that characterized much of DC’s output during the mid-2000s.
