Ashita no Joe, translated as Joe del Mañana in various Spanish-speaking markets, began as a seminal manga series written by Ikki Kajiwara and illustrated by Tetsuya Chiba. Debuting in 1968 in Weekly Shonen Magazine, the series captured the bleak realities of post-war Japan through the lens of boxing. Issue number 5 arrived during the early stages of the serialization, when Joe Yabuki was transitioning from a juvenile delinquent into a determined athlete under the guidance of his mentor, Danpei Tange.
