JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Part 7--Steel Ball Run #9

Steel Ball Run, the seventh story arc of Hirohiko Araki’s long-running manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, began serialization in 2004. Originally published in Weekly Shōnen Jump before transferring to the seinen magazine Ultra Jump, the series represented a major stylistic shift for Araki. Moving away from the established continuity of the previous six parts, he utilized a reimagined universe to explore a cross-country horse race across 19th-century America. Volume 9 serves as a critical chapter in the journey of protagonists Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli as they navigate the series' distinct blend of supernatural combat, western tropes, and philosophical themes.

Araki’s design approach for this volume continues his hallmark use of high-fashion aesthetics and dynamic, often unconventional character posing. By this stage in his career, Araki had moved toward a more intricate, fine-art influenced illustration style, distancing the work from the hyper-muscular tropes of 1980s shōnen manga. The series was met with significant critical acclaim for its narrative ambition and the artistic evolution of the Stand power system, securing its place as one of the most respected entries in the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise.
