Jumbo Comics #1 was published in September 1938 by Fiction House, a company originally known for pulp magazines that transitioned into the burgeoning comic book market. It arrived during the Golden Age of comics, serving as a signature title for the company. The issue was designed to be an anthology, featuring a variety of adventure and jungle-themed stories that capitalized on the contemporary popularity of the Tarzan archetype, most notably through its flagship character, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle.

The publication was notable for its large physical format, which was intended to offer more value to readers compared to the standard comic books of the era.
