Justice: Four Balance #1

Justice: Four Balance #1 arrived in 1996 as part of a wave of independent comic book publishing that sought to capitalize on the aesthetic trends of the nineties, which favored high-contrast artwork and stylized character designs. Published during a period when the industry was shifting away from the major publisher dominance of the previous decade, this issue was crafted to introduce readers to a self-contained narrative universe with a distinct visual identity.

The creative team behind the series leaned into a gritty, cinematic approach to superhero tropes, utilizing bold linework and shadow-heavy panels meant to evoke a sense of moral ambiguity. While the title reflects the era’s penchant for thematic, abstract concepts, its reception was primarily limited to niche collector circles, marking it as a quiet example of the era’s diverse experiments in independent storytelling.
