Where it came from
Published in March 1993, Justice League America #72 serves as a pivotal entry in the 'Death of Superman' era of DC Comics. Coming out of a period where the Justice League was deeply integrated into the overarching continuity of the wider DC Universe, this issue was written by Dan Jurgens and illustrated by Dan Jurgens and Rick Burchett. It focuses on the fallout of Superman's battle with Doomsday, exploring how the remaining league members navigate the grief and leadership vacuum left by the hero's passing.
The design of the issue captures the grit and heightened emotional stakes characteristic of early 1990s comic book aesthetics. Jurgens, who was simultaneously spearheading the Superman titles, intended for this run to ground the Justice League in the sobering reality of a world without its greatest protector. Upon release, the issue was well-received by readers who were deeply invested in the serialized 'Funeral for a Friend' storyline, cementing its status as an essential tie-in that bridged the gap between ensemble superhero action and character-driven drama.
