Where it came from
Justice League of America #1 was published by DC Comics in late 1960, marking the official debut of the team in their own dedicated title following successful trial appearances in The Brave and the Bold. Conceived by editor Julius Schwartz and writer Gardner Fox, the team was an update of the 1940s Justice Society of America, reimagined to capitalize on the success of the Silver Age Flash and Green Lantern. The goal was to bring together the publisher’s most prominent heroes, including Superman and Batman, in a cohesive lineup that reflected the growing popularity of team-based superhero adventures.
The cover and interior were illustrated by Mike Sekowsky, whose dynamic, panel-dense style helped define the look of the series for much of the 1960s. The issue introduced the team’s secret sanctuary and their first major antagonist, Despero, establishing a formula of cosmic-scale threats that would define the Justice League for decades. Upon its release, the comic was a significant commercial success, effectively launching the most iconic team-up franchise in the medium and solidifying the 'multiversal' shared universe structure that remains a cornerstone of DC Comics today.
