Kabushikigaisha Kamikakushi #12

Kabushikigaisha Kamikakushi, known in English as Corporate Spiriting Away, emerged during the late 1990s as a dark satirical manga series commenting on the intense pressure and supernatural absurdity of Japanese corporate culture. Issue #12 serves as a pivotal installment in the series, capturing the narrative shift where the mundane office environment fully succumbs to surreal, folkloric manifestations. The series was serialized in niche seinen magazines, appealing to readers who appreciated its blend of mundane labor conditions and eerie, psychological horror.

The character design and aesthetic were crafted to emphasize the dehumanizing nature of the salaryman experience, often utilizing stark black-and-white ink work to heighten the claustrophobic atmosphere of the office settings. Upon its release, the series was received as a cult classic, praised by critics for its biting social commentary and its ability to turn the banality of paperwork into a visceral, haunting visual experience. It remains a representative example of how underground manga during this period utilized genre fiction to critique shifting economic realities.
