Kaijin Fugeki: Kindled Spirits #3

Kaijin Fugeki: Kindled Spirits, published by Kodansha, emerged from the creative collaboration between writer Nisio Isin and illustrator Oh! Great. The series represents a distinct fusion of historical supernatural themes and the intricate, high-energy character design that defines the duo’s long-standing partnership, which previously gained significant acclaim for the manga series Bakemonogatari. The third issue continues the narrative arc established in the preceding volumes, maintaining the series' focus on complex, folklore-inspired supernatural entities set against a backdrop of Taisho-era Japan.

The aesthetic approach of the series leans heavily into the kinetic, detailed line work of Oh! Great, whose ability to balance grotesque creature designs with refined character portraiture serves as the visual cornerstone of the work. Upon its release, the series was received as a stylistic evolution for both creators, garnering attention for its ambitious world-building and the seamless integration of Nisio Isin’s idiosyncratic dialogue with the artist’s densely layered panels. It stands as a notable entry in the contemporary dark fantasy manga genre.
