Kami-sama no Volley #39

Kami-sama no Volley, illustrated by Ganma Ushiki and written by Yuuichi Kizaki, began its serialization in the Japanese seinen magazine Manga Action in 2013. The series focuses on a former professional volleyball coach who is tasked with turning around a struggling junior high school team, blending technical sports accuracy with the character-driven drama typical of the seinen sports genre. Issue 39 represents a later installment in this long-running narrative, which is noted for its grounded approach to volleyball strategy and the slow-burn psychological development of its central mentor figure.

The series design is characteristic of mid-2010s seinen sports manga, prioritizing fluid motion lines during game sequences and expressive, grounded character designs. Ushiki’s work on the series has been praised for its commitment to realistic anatomy and the intricacies of court positioning, a departure from the more stylized, high-octane depictions seen in other popular volleyball manga. By the time of issue 39, the series had established a dedicated readership that appreciated its refusal to rely on supernatural tropes, focusing instead on the practical grind of competitive athletics.
