Kamui-Den #6

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began serialization in the inaugural 1964 issue of the gekiga magazine Garo. Created by Sanpei Shirato, the series was a landmark work of social commentary that used the Edo period as a backdrop to explore themes of class struggle, caste systems, and historical materialism. Issue 6, published during the height of the series' influence, continues the epic narrative of a runaway ninja navigating a hostile feudal society.

Shirato’s artistic style was defined by high-contrast, kinetic line work that emphasized the brutality of the era and the fluid, often violent nature of the action sequences. The series was deeply influential among the Japanese student movements of the late 1960s, who resonated with its portrayal of systematic oppression and resistance. By the time this specific issue reached readers, Kamui-Den had cemented its status as a foundational text in the gekiga movement, shifting the medium of manga away from purely youth-oriented entertainment toward sophisticated, politically charged literature.
