Where it came from
Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began serialization in 1964 within the pages of the monthly magazine Garo. Created by Sanpei Shirato, the series emerged during a period of intense social and political upheaval in Japan, serving as a complex narrative exploration of class struggle, caste systems, and the harsh realities of life for outcasts in Edo-period Japan. Issue 7 reflects the series' commitment to dense, historical realism and philosophical inquiry, moving away from traditional hero-centric narratives to focus on systemic oppression.
Shirato’s illustrative style, characterized by gritty, highly detailed ink work and dynamic action sequences, was instrumental in defining the 'gekiga' movement, which aimed to bring mature, serious themes to manga readers. The reception was profound, as the series resonated deeply with student movements and intellectuals of the 1960s who saw the protagonist's quest for freedom as a parallel to their own fight against societal constraints. Issue 7 continues the series' established pattern of weaving individual tragedy into a broader tapestry of revolutionary discontent.
