Kamui-Den: Dainibu #1

Kamui-Den: Dainibu, or The Legend of Kamui: Part Two, was launched by Sanpei Shirato in the mid-1960s as a continuation of his groundbreaking gekiga epic. Following the immense cultural impact of the original series in the magazine Garo, this second part further explored the brutal, feudal landscape of Edo-period Japan. Shirato designed the narrative to dissect class struggle and systemic oppression, utilizing his signature stark, high-contrast artistic style to emphasize the harsh reality of the ninja experience.

The series is widely regarded as a seminal work in the history of manga, credited with elevating the medium from simple entertainment to complex sociopolitical commentary. Shirato’s meticulous research into historical agrarian movements and martial arts culture provided a dense, gritty foundation that resonated deeply with the politically charged student movements of the era. Upon its release, the work was celebrated for its uncompromising vision and served as a major intellectual influence on the development of the gekiga genre.
