Kamui-Den: Dainibu #2

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, began as a seminal gekiga manga series written and illustrated by Sanpei Shirato. Serialized starting in the 1960s, the work was deeply rooted in the sociopolitical climate of post-war Japan, utilizing the Edo period as a backdrop to explore themes of class struggle, feudal oppression, and the harsh realities of the disenfranchised. Shirato was known for his rigorous historical research and his commitment to depicting the brutal, systemic mechanisms that kept the lower classes in a perpetual state of subjugation.

The Dainibu, or Second Part, of the series continued Shirato's exploration of these intricate power dynamics following the immense cultural impact of the original run. The series is celebrated for its narrative density and the stark, kinetic quality of its artwork, which prioritized thematic weight and detailed choreography over traditional manga aesthetics of the time. Upon its release, it solidified Shirato’s reputation as a key figure in the avant-garde manga movement, influencing generations of artists and historians who viewed the work as a poignant critique of human society.
