Kamui-Den: Dainibu #4

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, was created by Sanpei Shirato and first serialized in the alternative manga magazine Garo starting in 1964. The series is widely regarded as a watershed moment for gekiga, a movement that shifted manga away from children's entertainment toward mature, sociopolitical narratives. Set during the Edo period, the story follows an outcast ninja struggling for survival amidst a rigid and oppressive caste system, serving as an allegorical critique of modern Japanese class structures and capitalist exploitation.

The second series, known as Dainibu, continued the complex historical and philosophical exploration of the original work. Sanpei Shirato was celebrated for his meticulous research into historical agrarian life and martial arts, which he paired with a stark, visceral artistic style. His work challenged the intellectual landscape of the 1960s and 1970s, influencing a generation of student activists and intellectuals who saw the protagonist's defiance of the shogunate as a reflection of their own struggles against institutional power.
