Kamui-Den: Dainibu #6

Kamui-Den, or The Legend of Kamui, is a landmark work of gekiga manga created by Sanpei Shirato. First serialized in the monthly magazine Garo in the 1960s, the series explored complex themes of feudal social structures, caste systems, and class struggle through the life of a runaway ninja. Dainibu, or the second part of the saga, continued Shirato's rigorous commitment to historical research and detailed, often brutal action sequences that helped define the maturity and intellectual depth of the gekiga genre.

The physical production of these volumes reflects the raw, uncompromising aesthetic of the Gekiga movement. Shirato, along with his production studio Akame-pro, focused on stark, high-contrast black-and-white ink work that emphasized the harsh conditions of the Edo period. Upon its release, the series was celebrated not merely as entertainment but as a potent political and social commentary that resonated deeply with the student activist movements of post-war Japan, cementing its status as a seminal piece of manga history.
