Where it came from
Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai, or Kaya-chan is Not Scary, is a supernatural comedy manga series written and illustrated by Minoru Takeyoshi. First serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine starting in 2022, the series centers on a kindergarten teacher who begins to suspect that one of her pupils, a young girl named Kaya-chan, possesses terrifying, otherworldly abilities. The narrative blend of mundane classroom settings and visceral horror elements quickly distinguished the series within the seinen demographic.
The design of the sixth volume continues the series' established aesthetic, which juxtaposes the innocent character design of the children with unsettling, grotesque illustrations of the spirits and entities surrounding Kaya-chan. Takeyoshi’s art style is noted for its high contrast and detailed line work, which emphasizes the uncanny nature of the protagonist. Since its debut, the series has been well-regarded for its unique tone, effectively balancing dark humor with genuine horror tropes to maintain a steady following in the Japanese market.
