Kichikowa: Jieitai Kichi de Hontō ni Atta Kowai Hanashi #1

Kichikowa: Jieitai Kichi de Hontō ni Atta Kowai Hanashi, or 'Scary Stories That Really Happened at Self-Defense Force Bases,' emerged as a niche manga anthology series in Japan. These volumes collect urban legends and supernatural anecdotes purportedly shared by members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. The series taps into the long-standing tradition of military ghost stories, serving as a cultural repository for the unique folklore that develops within isolated or high-stress environments like remote garrisons and training camps.

The design and content of the debut issue emphasize a grounded, documentary-style approach to horror. By framing the narratives as testimonies from service members, the artists aimed to create an unsettling atmosphere that bridges the gap between everyday military life and the inexplicable. Upon release, the series found a dedicated audience among readers interested in Japanese urban legends and military subculture, distinguishing itself from mainstream horror manga through its specific focus on the professional and psychological setting of the SDF.
