Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden #9

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden is a definitive collected edition of Sanpei Shirato’s influential gekiga series, Kamui-Den. Originally serialized in the 1960s, the series broke new ground in manga by blending historical period drama with deep socio-political commentary, focusing on the struggles of the outcast strata in feudal Japan. This specific Gaiden series was compiled later to offer readers a comprehensive look at the peripheral stories and character backstories that expanded upon the core narrative of the ninja Kamui.

The editorial design of the Zenshū edition focuses on preservation and accessibility for modern collectors, maintaining the raw, kinetic ink-work characteristic of Shirato's style. As a pioneer of the gekiga movement, Shirato utilized the medium to explore complex themes of class conflict and rebellion, which resonated heavily with the counter-culture movements in Japan during the time of the original publication. This edition is widely regarded by enthusiasts as a standard for documenting the visual evolution and narrative density of one of manga’s most significant historical epics.
