Where it came from
Konyaku Hakisareta Node, Suki ni Suru Koto ni Shita, which translates to 'My Engagement Was Annulled, So I Decided to Do What I Want,' originated as a web novel on the popular Japanese platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Written by Kohakuiro no Penguin, the story follows the protagonist, Luciana, who embraces a life of freedom after her engagement is abruptly severed. The narrative reflects the rising popularity of the villainess and engagement-annulment subgenres within isekai and fantasy light novels, focusing on personal empowerment and unconventional aristocratic life rather than traditional romantic tropes.
The physical light novel adaptation is illustrated by Yukiya Murasaki, whose character designs emphasize a delicate, elegant aesthetic consistent with the shōjo-influenced style common in the genre. Volume 3 continues the established character growth and world-building of the series, receiving attention for its lighthearted tone and subversion of the bitter-ex-fiancée narrative. It has been well-regarded by fans of the genre for its consistent pacing and the charm of its protagonist, solidifying its place within the broader market of serialized Japanese fantasy fiction.
