Kōyōkoku Kōkyūtan: Kokui no Shugo #1

Kōyōkoku Kōkyūtan: Kokui no Shugo is a Japanese light novel series written by Tōru Tegu and illustrated by Kikka Itsumi. First appearing in the mid-2010s, this work emerged within the competitive landscape of fantasy-themed light novels that lean heavily into political intrigue and imperial court drama. The narrative focuses on the internal power dynamics of a fictionalized historical setting, utilizing the visual appeal of its character designs to attract readers who enjoy traditional aesthetic motifs blended with modern light novel tropes.

The design of the inaugural volume reflects the standard format of the genre, featuring high-contrast cover art that highlights the series' titular black garments and the central characters' emotional gravity. Kikka Itsumi’s illustrations were specifically crafted to emphasize the series' serious tone, differentiating it from the lighter comedy-driven titles often found on the same shelves. Upon release, the volume served as the foundational entry for the series, establishing the tone and visual language that would define the franchise’s subsequent installments.
