Kuniyoshi, Hashiru: Bunsei Kiteretsu Sōdō #1

Kuniyoshi, Hashiru: Bunsei Kiteretsu Sōdō is a contemporary manga series that pays homage to the vibrant, fantastical spirit of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the legendary ukiyo-e master. The series reimagines the late Edo period through a stylized, kinetic lens, drawing inspiration from Kuniyoshi’s penchant for warriors, folklore, and humorous depictions of the supernatural. The first issue was created to serve as a bridge between traditional Japanese art history and modern graphic storytelling, utilizing a visual language that echoes the bold lines and dynamic compositions found in historic woodblock prints.

The character design and illustration work on this series aim to capture the grotesque and the whimsical, key elements of Kuniyoshi’s original works. By blending the historical Bunsei era with kiteretsu—a term meaning strange or odd—the creators intended to craft an aesthetic experience that feels both grounded in cultural heritage and strikingly inventive. Upon release, the series was received with curiosity by art history enthusiasts and manga fans alike, noted particularly for its dedication to honoring the stylistic lineage of the Utagawa school while providing a fresh, narrative-driven exploration of Edo-period eccentricity.
