Where it came from
Kuni wo Ketta Otoko, or The Man Who Kicked the Country, is a manga series authored by the acclaimed artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Published during a period when the gekiga movement was redefining Japanese comics, this work emerged from Tatsumi’s commitment to exploring the darker, more visceral realities of post-war Japanese society rather than the tropes of traditional children's manga.
The second issue continues the series' signature grim aesthetic and narrative focus, characterized by Tatsumi's stark, high-contrast ink work and cynical social commentary. As a pioneer of the alternative manga movement, Tatsumi’s design choices were intentionally gritty and grounded, aiming to strip away the idealism of the medium to confront readers with themes of desperation, moral ambiguity, and structural decay.
