Kurameru Kagari #1

Kurameru Kagari, created by artist Akihiro Ononaka, first emerged as a manga series serialized in the Japanese magazine MangaONE. The work is defined by its whimsical, steam-punk inspired aesthetic, centering on a young girl who operates a fantastical train in a soot-covered, underground city. Its design language draws heavily from retro-futuristic tropes, characterized by intricate mechanical detailing and a distinctively textured, atmospheric art style that emphasizes the claustrophobic yet magical nature of its setting.

The series was developed during a period of rising interest in niche, character-driven fantasy manga that blend industrial gloom with youthful exploration. Upon its release, the first issue was received as a promising debut that showcased Ononaka's strong world-building capabilities and unique visual identity. The narrative tone, which balances melancholy with a sense of adventure, helped the series garner a dedicated following, eventually leading to its adaptation into an animated feature film that further solidified its place in contemporary manga culture.
