La Main Gauche de Dieu et la Main Droite du Diable #1

La Main Gauche de Dieu et la Main Droite du Diable, translated as The Left Hand of God and the Right Hand of the Devil, is a French comic series written by Jean-Luc Istin and illustrated by Julien Carette. The series launched its first issue in the early 2000s, emerging during a period of renewed interest in European fantasy and historical fiction comics, often referred to as bande dessinée. The narrative explores dark, atmospheric themes, leaning into supernatural and theological motifs that were characteristic of the mature, narrative-driven comics published by Soleil Productions.

The visual identity of the work is defined by Julien Carette’s intricate and moody illustrative style, which was intended to ground the fantastical elements in a gritty, textured reality. Upon its debut, the series was noted for its ambitious world-building and commitment to a somber, cinematic aesthetic. It garnered respect within the specialized comic community for its ability to balance complex character dynamics with an expansive, ominous setting, cementing its place as a distinctive entry in the dark fantasy genre of the era.
