Where it came from
La Maison des Maiko, a manga series illustrated by Hirokazu Ochiai, offers a detailed and intimate look into the specialized world of Kyoto's geiko culture. This second volume continues the narrative exploration of the daily routines and rigorous training cycles inherent to the okiya, the houses where maiko reside during their apprenticeship. The work is noted for its respectful approach to a traditional Japanese lifestyle that remains largely hidden from the public eye, focusing on the discipline and the evolving relationships between the mentors and their young charges.
The aesthetic of the series is characterized by meticulous line work and an emphasis on the distinct seasonal attire and customs associated with the Gion district. Ochiai’s artistic direction seeks to balance technical accuracy with a gentle, observational tone, aiming to humanize the historical and cultural significance of the maiko. Upon its release, the series was received by readers as a contemplative slice-of-life title, praised for its commitment to documenting the subtle nuances of a specialized artisanal profession rather than relying on dramatic tropes.
