La Maison des Maiko #1

La Maison des Maiko, also known as Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san, began its life as a manga series written and illustrated by Aiko Koyama. First serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2016, the work was conceived to offer a gentle, observational look at the lives of maiko—apprentice geisha—living in the Gion district of Kyoto. Koyama’s artistic intent was to emphasize the domestic and communal aspects of the culture, focusing on the preparation of meals in a shared house rather than the performance art itself, providing a rare and grounded perspective on a historically guarded tradition.

The series was met with widespread critical acclaim for its warmth, empathy, and detailed depiction of Kyoto’s culinary traditions. This reception led to its receipt of the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category in 2020. The visual design of the inaugural issue reflects Koyama’s soft, ink-washed aesthetic, which serves to bridge the gap between the rigid, centuries-old customs of the kagai and the relatable, everyday reality of young women navigating a vocational path in modern Japan.
