La Maison Usher #1

La Maison Usher, a French-language comic series published by Delcourt, was conceived as an atmospheric adaptation inspired by the dark, gothic sensibilities of Edgar Allan Poe. Launched to explore psychological dread through the medium of the bande dessinée, the series utilizes a stark and shadow-heavy aesthetic intended to evoke the claustrophobia of the original source material. The first issue serves as an introduction to the architectural and emotional isolation that defines the narrative, positioning the house itself as the primary antagonist of the story.

The visual identity of this debut issue is characterized by its dramatic use of chiaroscuro, a stylistic choice made to mirror the classic tropes of nineteenth-century horror literature. Creators involved in the project aimed to revitalize Poe's narrative through a modern European lens, prioritizing mood and pacing over fast-paced action. Upon its release, the work was noted by critics for its meticulous page layouts and the deliberate, slow-burn tension established within the opening sequences of the inaugural volume.
