Le Fantôme #226

Le Fantôme, the French-language iteration of Lee Falk’s iconic comic strip The Phantom, has been a staple of Francophone pulp culture since its introduction in the mid-20th century. Issue #226 emerged during a period when the character was deeply embedded in the European comics market, published by Éditions des Remparts. These serial publications were designed for mass consumption at newsstands, providing accessible, high-adventure escapism to a postwar audience that favored the hero’s classic moral clarity and exotic setting.

The visual design of these issues relied on the established iconography of the Ghost Who Walks, featuring the stark, recognizable purple costume and skull ring motifs that defined the character since his 1936 debut. The illustrations for the French series often repurposed original American syndicated strips or utilized house-style artists to maintain consistency with the established brand. While these issues were primarily considered ephemeral reading material at the time of their release, they are now appreciated as significant artifacts of international comic book history and the global reach of classic American pulp heroes.
