Legion of Super-Heroes #82

Legion of Super-Heroes #82, published in July 1996, arrived during a tumultuous and transformative era for DC Comics' flagship team of futuristic teenagers. As part of the 'The Final Night' crossover event, this issue was tasked with bridging the narrative gap between the established history of the Legion and the shifting editorial direction of the late nineties. The creative team, led by writer Tom McCraw and artist Lee Moder, navigated a complex continuity to maintain the momentum of a franchise that had been undergoing constant revisions since the mid-eighties reboot.

The visual and narrative approach of this era favored a grittier, more streamlined aesthetic, moving away from the sprawling, silver-age grandeur that originally defined the series. Lee Moder’s work on this issue was characterized by a clean, balanced composition that sought to modernize the sprawling cast while keeping the core dynamics of the Legion intact. Reception at the time was mixed, as long-term readers navigated the implications of the storyline's heavy continuity, though it remains a notable snapshot of the mid-nineties effort to keep the team relevant amidst a rapidly evolving comic book industry.
