Ludwig Von Drake #4

Ludwig Von Drake #4 was published in 1963 as part of the Gold Key Comics line, which had recently taken over the licensing for Disney characters from Dell Comics. The character, a frantic polymath uncle to Donald Duck, was introduced by Walt Disney himself during the 1961 television special 'An Adventure in Color.' His transition into his own dedicated comic series sought to capitalize on his brief but popular stint as the eccentric, fast-talking lecturer of the Disney television world.

The character design leaned heavily into the mid-century caricature of the absent-minded professor, distinguished by his iconic spectacles, tuft of white hair, and oversized lab coat. Illustrators for this series maintained a classic house style consistent with the Disney studio's aesthetic of the era, focusing on slapstick scenarios and academic parodies. While the series was intended to expand the reach of the Disney comic universe beyond the established inhabitants of Duckburg, it remained a niche publication that today serves as a quintessential example of 1960s character-driven licensed comics.
