Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #37

The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves was a long-running horror anthology series published by Charlton Comics, beginning in 1967. This specific issue, number 37, arrived in 1973 during a period when the Comics Code Authority had begun to loosen restrictions on horror content, allowing for more visceral storytelling than was possible in the previous decade. The series served as a cornerstone of Charlton’s supernatural line, positioning the titular Dr. Graves as a narrator who bridged the gap between the audience and the macabre vignettes presented within.

The design of the series leaned heavily into the classic pre-code horror aesthetic, utilizing a rotation of artists such as Steve Ditko, who contributed frequently to the title. Like many Charlton titles of the era, the production prioritized low-cost printing and distribution, often making these issues harder to find in high-grade condition today. While the title never reached the industry dominance of competitors like DC’s House of Mystery, it maintained a loyal following among readers who appreciated its earnest, somewhat campy approach to the ghost story genre.
