Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #49

The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves was a staple of the Charlton Comics horror line, debuting in 1967 during a period when the publisher sought to compete with the gruesome appeal of EC Comics while navigating the strictures of the Comics Code Authority. Issue number 49, published in late 1974, serves as a quintessential example of the series' reliable anthology format, where the titular Dr. Graves acts as a macabre host introducing supernatural tales to the reader.

The creative direction of the series was heavily influenced by editor and writer Joe Gill, who maintained a distinctive, pulpy house style across much of the Charlton catalog. The artwork in this period often relied on a rotating stable of artists who provided the moody, atmospheric visuals necessary for the supernatural genre. While this issue remains a niche collectible, it is valued by enthusiasts for its contribution to the bronze age of horror comics and its adherence to the idiosyncratic, low-budget charm that defined the Charlton aesthetic.
