Where it came from
Released in 1994, Martha Washington Goes to War serves as the second miniseries in the acclaimed science fiction saga created by writer Frank Miller and artist Dave Gibbons. Published by Dark Horse Comics, the story continues the journey of Martha Washington, a courageous soldier operating in a dystopian, balkanized future United States. This fourth issue provides a crucial conclusion to the arc, showcasing Miller’s signature biting political satire and Gibbons’ clean, precise illustrative style that effectively balances complex world-building with intense character development.
The collaboration between Miller and Gibbons was highly anticipated, as it united two of the most influential creators in the medium following their respective successes on iconic works like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns. The series was designed to explore themes of environmental collapse, military-industrial excess, and individual resilience against systemic corruption. Upon its release, the project received significant critical praise for its ambitious narrative scope and the strong, grounded depiction of Martha as a rare beacon of integrity in a fractured society.
