Martian Manhunter #1

Martian Manhunter #1, published in 1998, serves as the debut solo limited series for J'onn J'onzz, a character who had previously been a staple of the Justice League since his 1955 introduction. Written by John Ostrander with art by Tom Mandrake, the series was designed to deepen the psychological complexity of the character by exploring his struggle to balance his Martian heritage with his chosen life as a protector of Earth. The narrative sought to ground the character in a gritty, modern context, moving away from his earlier, lighter sci-fi portrayals.

The creative direction focused on establishing J'onn's internal conflict and his unique status as a telepathic outsider. Mandrake’s artistic style, often noted for its moody and atmospheric qualities, complemented Ostrander’s character-driven scripts. The series was well-regarded by critics and fans alike for successfully humanizing a powerful extraterrestrial, solidifying the Martian Manhunter's identity as the 'heart and soul' of the DC Universe during the late 1990s.
